Andong Folk Village. Almost within walking distance of Andong proper is the Andong Folk Village. It's nowhere near as large as its cousin soutdide Suwon, south of Seoul, but it serves a different purpose. Andong Folk Village was built ot house all the cultural assets which were moved to prevent them from being drowned by the reservoir when Andong Dam was built in 1976 Here you'll find a series of relocated and partially reconstructed traditional style buildings, ranging from simple thatched peasants' farmhouses to the more elaborate mansions with multiple courtyards of government officals and the like. Where this village differs from the one at Suwon is that many of the houses are also reastaurants, and for atmosphere and quality of food it cannot be beat. Koreans have already discovered this and it's a very popular place to go for lunch of dinner. You'll find both the people who run the restaurants and their guests very friendly indeed. It has to be the place to meet people in Andong. Not only that, but the prices of meals here are very resonable; the two simpler restaurants near the top of the hill are the cheapest. The village is situated about 3 km east of Andong, close to the dam wall on the opposite side of the river from the road which runs beside the railway track. A concrete bridge connects the 2 sides at this point. Note this is not the first bridge across the river at the smaller dam on the outskirts of Andong but the one beyond it. Local bus No 3 from the city centre will get you here.
